What is the Student Design Competition?

The competition is aimed at meeting three goals:

  • Provide an opportunity for students showcase their design skills in a local competition
  • Provide an opportunity for students to gain recognition in the local non-profit and design communities
  • Provide the Institute a design set that can be utilized in print publications to establish a brand identity

Background Information

The David Feldt Institute of the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland provides health and wellness education programming to the HIV+ and at-risk communities.  The Institute’s tagline is “Be Healthy.  Live Well.  Positively.”.  The goal of the Institute is to act as an “outfitter”; equipping people with the knowledge and behavioral changes necessary to reduce their personal risk of infection or the risk of transmitting the illness to others.  The Institute encourages personal growth and independence through seminars that address the well-being of the whole person:  spiritual, emotional and physical. Participants are encouraged to pursue their goals:  going to college; finding stable, permanent housing; pursuing employment; or simply improving their health.  Many are resilient, long-term survivors (10 or more years), who after coming to terms with their illness, are ready to begin living again, helping themselves and others.

Design a logo that reflects the spirit of the Institute and its participants.  The logo will be used in all marketing materials for the Institute, including a full-color catalog printed twice a year, and individual seminar flyers and postcards.  Include a color scheme and set of fonts that can be used with all of these materials.

To enter the competition, students must submit a completed submission form for each entry, a scanned copy of his/her student identification card, and the logo in .eps format by email to ckohls@atfgc.org by Sunday, May 3 at 4:00pm.  The email date-time stamp will identify entries submitted by the deadline.  Students may submit up to (3) three design sets.  We strongly encourage consideration of:

  • The mission of the Institute
  • The community served by the Institute’s programming
  • How your design resonates with the Institute and its participants.

The Competition Structure

All submissions must be in English.  The submission must include:

  • The submission form, which includes the pantone color scheme and fonts, as well as a concise description of the perspective taken to resonate the mission of the Institute with the proposed design
  • The logo in .eps format
  • A scanned copy of the designer’s 2008-09 student identification card

Reviewing Criteria

Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed.  All submissions must be your own work.  Each submission will be assigned a number so as not to be personally identifiable by the panel of judges.  The panel consists of area professionals.

The submission will be reviewed based on

  • Appropriateness/relevance of the design to the provided background information
  • Originality of the design
  • Compelling, effective visual design

Awards

The best in show entry will receive a $2,000 cash prize.  The winning designer will be identified in all subsequent publications of the David Feldt Institute in which the design set is used.

The Judging Panel

Each submission, while anonymous during the judging phase, may be identified to the judges once the competition winner has been announced.  This process ensures a blind judging process, while allowing the panel to identify the work of the designers the panel wishes to learn more about after the competition is closed.
